The colonists did not believe that Britain had the right to tax them. If they had no representation in Parliament, then as British subjects they should not be taxed. This belief lead to a popular colonial statement "No taxation without representation" and that statement echoed loudly through the ears of the colonists that were quickly getting tired of British rule.
During the next few pages you will learn more about several taxes imposed by the British, you will see how the colonists reacted and what the British did in response to those reactions. You will finish up the lesson on taxes with a note card assignment followed by a quiz.
