Patriots
As you read, Patriots wanted to break away from Great Britain and form a new country. Many Patriots wanted to break away because they enjoyed the freedom of not being controlled by a king and the recent taxes placed on the colonies made them feel like they were living in Britain again.
Some Patriots, like tea merchants wanted independence because they wanted freedom to run their business without the control of Parliament.
In many cases families were torn apart by the decision to become a Patriot or Loyalist. A great example of this is Ben Franklin. He is considered one of the greatest Patriots of this country, yet his son remained loyal to Britain because he was the royal governor of New Jersey and he supported King George.
Choosing to become a Patriot and fight for independence was going to be hard. The colonists were untrained, had fewer supplies and no navy. There were certain advantages facing the colonists though, they were fighting to defend their homes and they knew the land better. In addition, most colonists owned their own guns and were good shots.
